This amazing paper-mache figurine is part of a 40's series that were made in Italy. There are two teams- a blue team and a red team with 9 players on each team. There are also two umpire statues. This example is from the blue team and is of a batter. The statues appear to be ahead of their time as the player is painted with a black face and these statuettes were seemingly made before Jackie Robinson entered Major League Baseball. There is some minor paint loss on the base and a spot of discoloration on his back. It displays beautifully. This series of baseball statues are a must for any sports figural collection.
