ITPC's 2012 SPORTS MEMORABILIA AUCTION- 200 LOTS

**This statue and the following 6 lots are part of an amazing find from the Eddie Stanky estate. We believe that they are prototypes for a proposed series of busts that would have been made of plastic. We already know that the company (Petito Studios) issued plastic candy containers in the late 40's/early 50's of Jackie Robinson and Ted Williams. These prototypes are similar in size and styling. Our research found an article in the July 1949 issue of Baseball Digest detailing this proposed series. The article is titled "Braves Busting Out all Over" and it states that artist Albert Petito was sculpting plaster busts of Boston Braves players which would eventually be made in plastic. The intent was to sell the plastic versions in souvenir stands in the stadium an idea that we believe never came to fruition. We have seen plaster versions of Vern Stephens & Warren Spahn, but a number of these busts are new to us and the hobby. It is a very important figural find and these busts are must have for any baseball historian.**
This bust is of Babe Ruth and is the only one of the seven busts being offered that is a different size. It measures about 6" tall and has his name embossed on the base. The company name is also embossed on the back base of the bust with the number "49" which we believe is to indicate 1949. This makes sense as ruth had passed away the year prior and this would have been a fantastic tribute to one of Baseball's All-Time greats. This bust is in beautiful condition with no chips or cracks and strong paint. It's painted to look bronze. We would grade it a strong excellent plus.
